By land or by air? A travel Q&A

Ever heard of the Liebster Awards? Chances are you have, but for those that haven’t, the Liebsters are an award given by bloggers to other bloggers. Something like a chain letter, they are passed from one to another in order to connect the blogging community and provide a platform for emerging bloggers.

Thanks so much to @beatravelling ( for nominating me for a Liebster Award!

It’s taken me a while to get my answers together, but here we go…

Big city or in the middle of nowhere?

Having grown up in London, big cities will always feel like home. But give me a deserted beach with waves the temperature of bath water, white powder sand and a green drinking coconut and that’s when I’m at my happiest.

Travel solo or with company?

Travelling solo always seemed like the most daunting challenge until I actually took it on, and then it quickly became my favourite way to travel. Complete freedom, added motivation to meet new people, no drama – what’s not to love? Although truly special places and moments always make me long for a friendly face to share the experience with.

Hotel suite or bunk bed?

I’ve had my fair share of dorm bunk beds, and I have to admit that, while they came with a generous helping of fun times and friendly faces, I’m more drawn to the comfort and privacy of hotel suites these days. Could be a sign I’m getting old!

Top notch restaurant or food stall?

Food is very important to me and so I ensure I sample a mix of both fine dining and street food while travelling. The only thing I make a point of not eating is western fast food! Although I do draw the line at the more adventurous dishes sometimes on offer. Yes, I’m a wimp…

Head above or below water?

Both! I love exploring the underwater world by snorkel and scuba. But I also love discovering the world above the waves. My happy place is definitely somewhere in the middle – although I’m not one for being laid out on a beach all day long. My attention span is way too short for that.

By land or by air?

Travelling by land is always going to be my travel method of choice – it’s cheaper and you get to see way more. But time constraints often make air the more convenient option when trying to cram as much into an itinerary as possible.

On a flight, sleep or entertainment?

Although I do love the opportunity to catch up on the latest blockbusters, I tend to do some of my best sleeping on airplanes. So generally, I try and do a bit of both – with a glass or two of red wine squeezed in for good measure.

Near or faraway places?

I’m from the UK but live in Australia so my perception of near and faraway is a little skewed. Basically, there’s no place I wouldn’t like to visit, but the countries that hold the most allure for me are those where the culture is distinct from my day to day, offering brand new experiences and understanding.

Plan ahead or decide as you go?

I tend to plan ahead, but once I get to a place those plans generally seem to fall by the wayside as chatting to locals and other travellers reveal different experiences and ways of seeing them.

Budget or sky is the limit?

I’d love to say the sky is the limit for this one but unfortunately my finances do not allow for such an answer! I’m very aware of cost when travelling, but I certainly splurge here and there for fear of missing out.

On day trips, tour group or on your own?

I definitely prefer to explore a destination under my own steam, but sometimes tour groups can get you where you need to go with the minimum fuss and hassle.

Big shout out also to @TravelExpeLive ( who originally nominated me for a Liebster in January 2013, but slack ol’ me never got around to completing my end of the nomination – sorry Bram! Hope all is well with you.

  1. Hi miss Stinky 😉

So much fun to read your answers! Sounds like we’re two peas in a pod – a lot of similarities 🙂 Travelled Australia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands this summer. You have a lot of nice stuff around you! Hopefully I’ll make it back to the Pacific islands one day.
